North Valley School is a non-public special education program contracting with a variety of separate school districts and SELPAs to provide services to students in residential treatment facilities and students living with parents in the Redding area. North Valley School is a 30,000 sq. ft. facility on approximately 17 acres with over 80 faculty and staff and numerous program components designed to meet the needs of up to 112 special education youngsters. The physical plant includes 12 classrooms, four fully equipped vocational / shop classrooms, a complete high and low ropes challenge course, riding arena, Agriculture Science building, a sport and recreation area, a commercial kitchen and dining/meeting room, conference rooms and administrative offices.

North Valley School also
operates a program on the main campus for developmentally delayed youngsters with autistic characteristics. North Valley School offers a wide variety of services to severely emotionally disturbed, learning handicapped, developmentally disabled and duel diagnosed adolescents including:

Day Treatment
Services including psychiatric therapy provided by psychiatrists and structured group therapy provided by licensed clinicians.

Therapeutic Riding Program
Using horses to therapeutically develop relationship skills, develop self-confidence, and learn responsibility.


Challenges


A rock wall challenge and complete high and low element rope challenge course.

Individualized reality-based academic instruction
All curriculum areas are included, leading to a high school diploma provided by five Special Education credentialed teachers and ten full-time certificate teaching assistants.

Classroom and community based independent living skills
.
This training, along with a Workability Grant, provides employment opportunities and job coaching for students.

Hands-on vocational training.
Designed to prepare students for entry level jobs in the community.
Courses include:
-Clothes making and textiles
-Office skills in word processing, filing, phone etc.
-Landscaping and grounds maintenance
-Service station and auto maintenance
-Fire woodcutting (a small student run business)
-Food service
-Cosmetology
-Custodial

A highly structured and closely monitored behavior management system
utilizing a combination of Reality Therapy and Behavior Modification.


This system provides immediate and consistent feedback and response
to behavior in a nurturing environment by staff who are re-trained periodically. Student behavior and educational data is collected and entered into
a computerized database daily and reported quarterly. Problem behaviors are addressed through the application of functional analysis and positive programming procedures.

Social skills
Training is infused in the curriculum for all students.

Psychological and Social Worker services
Provided by a full time PPS credentialed social worker.

State workability
Supported work experience on campus. And community-based paid work experience and job coaching provided by NVS Vocational Staff.

Transitional planning

These services are provided by the PPS, credentialed staff, Teacher, Vocational Coordinator and designed to enable exiting students to emancipate successfully.

On-site developmentally disabled program
This program is community based with one teacher and four teaching assistant/job coaches per nine students.
