VCSS Barstow is located in the city of Barstow, CA. Once a small mining center and railroad town in California's Mojave Desert, Barstow is located at the junction of 3 major highways -- Interstate 15, Interstate 40 and State Highway 58. It is centrally located in the western Mojave at the entrance to the Mojave National Preserve and is home of the U.S. Army National Training Center, Marine Corps Logistics Base, NASA's Goldstone Deep Space Network and Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad Yards. The population of the city is nearly 21,5000 and it is 2,106 feet above sea level. Barstow is a great starting point when touring the western Mojave Desert. Outdoor explorers, amateur geologists and hikers enjoy nearby Rainbow Basin and Owl Canyon Campground, Afton Canyon, Kelso Dunes, and many other adventures, including Calico Early Man Site, historic Harvey House Depot, Calico Ghost Town, a restored silver mining town and the world-class water park complex at Lake Dolores. The VCSS Barstow site provides much needed programming and services to underserved residents of this California desert community.
The VCSS Barstow site serves children and families from birth to 65 years in age. We offer an array of programs including SB 163 Wraparound (Family Vision), Specialty Mental Health Services, and Prevention and Early Intervention Services to military families. Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) are also available to children and families who qualify for this highly specialized and intensive service.
The services and programming offered by our Barstow site provide our staff a unique and broad work experience inspiring their growth and development within the Victor Agency. VCSS- Barstow emphasizes the utilization of evidence based, promising practices, and best practice treatment approaches. The mission of the wraparound program specifically is "to do whatever it takes" for each client by implementing cutting edge practices that increase the client's chances for success. These practices include but are not limited to Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Connection Maps, Health and Wellness Plans, Vocational Rehabilitation, Aggression Replacement Training, Nurturing Parents/Fathers Education, Infant/Toddler/Preschooler Mental Health, and Co-Occurring services utilizing the Matrix Model.
Like our many sister sites in VCSS, it is our goal at VCSS- Barstow to include the parents and caregivers in all aspects of the specialized services designed for their children. Family involvement services include creating Connection Maps and helping families learn to use natural supports as well as creating moments of celebration such as annual family picnics and client graduations.
Outcome measures are an integral part of the VCSS Barstow program and services and we utilize the information gathered to evaluate service quality and client and family progress as well as providing feedback to those agencies we contract with. The VCSS Barstow site is committed to excellence in service delivery at all levels and adheres to the agency mission "to be a catalyst for sustained improvement in the lives of those we touch."
